Michael Hickey – Club: Athletics NW

Mike Hickey began his distance running career at Hudson’s Bay High School where he found an outlet for his competitive spirit, finishing first team all-state in cross country and track. As a junior college athlete, Hickey won 2 individual NWAACC Championships (Cross Country 1992 and 5k 1994), along with 3 team Championships. After Clackamas, Hickey competed for Washington State University and the University of Oregon. At the University of Oregon coach Hickey’s philosophy about coaching began to take hold, working under the tutelage of Bill Dellinger.


Hickey started his coaching career at Colfax as a volunteer and found his calling, three All State athletes came out of this short period of time, including 2 top three finishers.
Shortly after graduating from college, coach Hickey was offered the Head Cross Country / Assistant Track and Field position at Alma Matter Clackamas Community College. Coaching 4 NWAACC Championship teams (1999, 2000 Men’s Cross Country, 2000 Women’s Cross Country, and the 2001 Women’s Track & Field Team).

While coaching at Clackamas he mentored twenty individuals to All-American honors; while being voted Coach of the Year for the Southern Region, and the NWAACC Conferences in 1999 and 2000. Establishing Clackamas as one of the top five junior college
distance programs in the nation, between 1998-2001. In 2005 coached Paul Kezes (Clackamas Alumni) to a 6 th place finish at the US Cross Country Championships, earning a spot on the 12k US Team.

In 2001 coach Hickey was hired by Portland State University. During this time the men’s team finished the 2004 season ranked 12 th in the NCAA Western Region and the women’s team finished 11 th place at the NCAA Western Region Championships in 2002. In 2005 distance athletes scored 45 points at the 2005 Big Sky Indoor Conference Championships, with 8 earning all-conference honors.

Coach Mike Hickey began working with Alexa Efraimson as a middle school athlete, which led to coaching her at the high school level, and ultimately the professional level for Nike. During this time Alexa finished 3 rd @ World Youth Championships and 3 rd place finish at the Pan Am Games; running personal bests of 2:00.95 for 800m and 4:03.39 for
1500m. In addition, under the Nike flag, Mike coached McKayla Fricker (Canby HS Graduate) from 2:06 to 2:00.81 in 2015.

From 2007-2014 coach Hickey had the pleasure of building Camas High School into a national power. During this period of time the team grew from 35 athletes to 93 in his last season; while guiding 7 athletes to WIAA first team State Championship honors. The 2012 Girl’s Cross Country Team finished with the fastest average (18:33.9) time for the top 5
team finishers in Washington State History. His teams have won 3 regional titles and 2 state championships, additionally finishing 13th at the Nike Team Nationals. During this period of time, coach Hickey had the opportunity to coach Alexa Efraimson: 3 time WIAA State Champion, National Champion, 3 place at the World Youth Championships, and 3 rd place
finish at the Pan American Games.

Michael Hickey had the pleasure of coaching with Rob Conner for 2 seasons at the University of Portland in August of 2017, assisting the Pilots to a 2 nd place finish at the NCAA Championships. In 2018 the Pilots finished 3 rd at the NCAA Championships, prior to making the move to Eugene where his Nike duties called.
